It's a time to return on all life's blessings, including your family and friends. It also includes the food we eat and the traditions passed down from generation to generation.
Thanksgiving is a three-day festival celebrated by the people of India and the whole world, like Canada, the USA, Japan, Germany, etc. Timings for the festival are similar to Christmas, but it has their uniqueness.
This festival is celebrated because it is the way to thank and express gratitude towards the Supreme for all he has done for us. It is an event where people are called to show gratitude in all forms, words, feelings, and actions.
Thanksgiving is when we express gratitude to those who had an important role in our lives. It is celebrated on the last Thursday of November with kindness, company, and the support of loved ones, friends, and neighbors. Thanksgiving marks an opportunity to thank all their blessings, be thankful for good fortune, and refocus on what matters.
Journey of Thanksgiving in India
During the British Raj, the UK government introduced a 'divide-and-rule policy that sought to provoke civil unrest by institutionalizing Hinduism and Christianity as separate religions and playing them against each other.
As there were no holidays in Indian schools or universities at the time, most Indians were unaware of Thanksgiving. However, during WWII, with commonwealth soldiers fighting for the Allied forces in Europe, it was inevitable that some of these soldiers would end up meeting with Americans serving in Europe. So some Indian soldiers came to know about Thanksgiving as well.
The British Raj colonial government also made sure that people from different religions did not feel left out by celebrating both thanksgiving days on different days. After independence, after almost five decades, the thanksgiving day was adopted as a Celebration.
Most people think that this day is all about food, so they make various tasty dishes reflecting nature's bounty. Thanksgiving dinner usually begins with appetizers. It includes cheese balls or shrimp cocktails in North America and Europe. Turkey with stuffing is traditionally served as the main course for Thanksgiving dinner.
India is a multilingual and multicultural country. In this country, every festival of any religion can be celebrated with love and joy. That's why India has a different vision of the whole world. Indian culture has always had a deep appreciation of nature and everything that the environment provides. Because of this, Indians are perceived differently throughout the world.
