The National Law Day of India - Samvidhan Diwas 2022


Constitution Day is Celebrated in India on Nov 26 every year. It is known as National Law Day or "Samvidhan Diwas". This occasion is a significant event in the life of the Indian republic, as it marks the adoption of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on Nov 26, 1949.

Today, Thousands of public schools and colleges are closed across India as a mark of respect for Dr. B R Ambedkar and his contribution to our nation. Constitution Day Commemorative Lecture Series aims to realize the Constitution's importance.


The year 2022 is the 132nd birth anniversary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, who played a pivotal role in revising the Constitution by contributing to its pages on religion-based reservations and women's quotas.


This day creates an intellectual discourse amongst participants on diverse topics related to constitutional structure, Indian Polity, Pluralism in Indian Society, etc.

Constitution of India

The Constitution of India announces the country is a sovereign, secular, socialist, and democratic republic. It assures its citizen equality, liberty, and justice. The Constitution is a prop of written principles, procedures, restrictions, rights, directive principles, and duties of the Government and the country's citizens. 

The Constitution was first drafted in 1906 at the suggestion of political leaders and social reformers, including Mohandas Karam Chand Gandhi and Bipin Chandra Pal. Its predecessor was an interim Constitution drafted in 1935 as proposed by Dr. B R Ambedkar, along with the other demands for constitutional reform as per his one hundred conditions for constitutional reform(1923).

Constitution Meaning

The Meaning of the Constitution is Samvidhan. It is a document laying down the basic principles and framework of the Government. Basic formulae are laid down to derive the powers, duties, and authority of the center and the states. The Supreme Court is considered a guardian of the Constitution in India. The judiciary is also an integral part of Indian Democracy. Constitution words include justice, social, economic, and political.

History of Constitution Day

The Indian Constitution was adopted on Nov 26, 1949, and came into effect on Jan 26, 1950. On this day, Information regarding the importance of this document and how it has changed the lives of Indians. It defines the power and function of all state organs and lays down the fundamental policies concerning the socio-economic system.

  • In 2022, On #ConstitutionDay, the preface from the Constitution was read in all schools by all students.

  • Essay and quiz competitions should be held in every school. Hence, The students who participated in the quiz and essay competitions got an opportunity to learn about their rights and duties under our Constitution.

  • The Ministry asked heads of Indian Schools in different parts of the world of External Affairs to celebrate Nov 26 as Constitution Day and distribute a copy of the Constitution to their students.

B R Ambedkar is regarded as the chief architect of the Constitution and one of its major contributors. He played a major role in the drafting committee for the Constitution of India. He is also known as the father of the Indian Constitution.

A Brief Timeline

After the adoption of the Indian Constitution, the Constituent Assembly elected Dr. B R Ambedkar as its first President. He became the first Law Minister when he Introduced Direct Taxes in India. On Oct 11, 1951, the Cabinet Mission(later renamed the Viceroy's Executive Council) arrived in India to administer British Indian Governments in preparation for Independence.
