Tulsi(Basil) is the Symbol of devotion or Science?


We are from India, and our culture is vast. Don't be afraid I'm not telling you the history of any culture. I want to tell you about the basil plant's importance in our religion, Sanatan dharma or Hindu religion, not our books but according to science.

Basil plant has herbs, is very useful and widely used in Ayurveda, and is also used as a herbal tea. Basil plants are considered sacred in Hinduism. India already knows the importance of basil plants in medicine and our culture or religion, and it has used these plants for thousands of years. I will tell you both aspects according to our religion and science.

 

Some people do not agree with religion, but they trust science. First, I will tell you the importance of basil plants in Hinduism or the Hindu religion.

 

Do you know the Story of the holy basil plant in Hinduism?

 

The Tulsi, Holy Basil, is a sacred plant in Hinduism and is believed by Hindus. Hindus consider it an earthly manifestation of the goddess tulsi; she is regarded as the avatar of the goddess Lakshmi and, thus, the consort of Vishnu. Later she married Jalandhar and is known by the name Vrinda. Their leaves are recommended in ritualistic worship of God Vishnu and his avatars like Krishna and Vithoba. 

 

Hindus worship and have used Holy Basil in India for centuries. Many Hindus grow Tulsi plants in front of or near their houses. Traditionally, Holy Basil is planted in the center of the central courtyard of Hindu houses. It is also called the queen of herbs and has antibacterial properties.

 

Type of Holy Basil

Basil has many types, but it has four main types:

 

1. Krishna Tulsi ( Shyam Tulsi)

2. Rama Tulsi

3. Vana Tulsi

4. Kapoor Tulsi

 

1. Rama Basil:- Rama Basil is also known by another name like Green leaf tulsi, Sri, or Lakshmi tulsi, and their scientific name is Ocimum sanctum. The Rama tulsi release a strong aroma from every part. It is widely famous for its cooling state. It is also found in eastern Nepal, Bengal, Bihar, and Chittagong.

 

2. Shyama Basil:- It has various names like Krishna tulsi and Purple leaf Basil, and its scientific name is Ocimum Sanctum. Because of the purple leaves, Lord Krishna's skin color is dark, according to the Veda. It is famous for its crispy and peppery taste. Purple leaf tulsi is also used to cure throat infections, respiratory system, Nasal lesions, and skin diseases. 

 

3. Vana Basil: - The scientific name of Vana tulsi is Ocimum gratissimum and wild leaf basil. It can grow up to 2m with highly aromatic and hairy green leaves. The potent antioxidant activity of Vana Tulsi slows down the aging process. It originated in India and Sri Lanka.

 

4.  Kapoor Basil: - This is also known as Heavy Flowered Basil. This type of Basil has garnished its name due to the sweet fragrance that can keep insects and mosquitoes daily. Using Kapoor basil can help treat malaria, diarrhea, skin disease, eye diseases, and insect bites.

Tulsi is well known for its medical properties – antibacterial, antifungal, antipyretic, antioxidant, antiseptic, and anti-cancer. It helps in the healing of the human body naturally.

Benefits and Uses of Tulsi Plants:-

 

Holy Basil holds vitamin C and antioxidants such as Eugenol, which protects the heart from the harmful effects of free radicals. It also helps in reducing cholesterol levels in the blood.

 

  • Anti-Aging:- Tulsi is the detoxifying agent that helps lower the uric acid levels in the body. It also helps in the breakdown of the stones.

 

  • Tulsi acts as a migraine pain and headache reliever.

 

  • Tulsi is a natural mouth freshener that destroys all the harmful bacteria responsible for dental problems like cavities, plaque, and bad breath; it also protects the teeth.

 

  • Basil is a rich source of vitamin "K," which plays an important role in bone health and heart health.

 

  • Basil is a natural immunity booster.

 

  •  It reduces cold, cough & other respiratory disorders.

 

  • It's good for diabetes patients. 

 

  •  Good for skin and hair.

 

Who cannot Consume or Use Basil?

 

  • Pregnant women should avoid tulsi.

 

  • Not Suitable for Pregnant Women – Tulsi leaves can affect their health and their embryos. Due to more consumption of their leaves, it makes caused miscarriage of her.

 

  • It is not good for Low diabetic patients or diabetic patients According to many types of research, Tulsi Can help to maintain low blood sugar levels in the body. It's not good for low sugar level patients. If a diabetic patient is already taking medicine for diabetes, then intake of tulsi leaves may enhance the effects and cause the sugar level to fall too low.

 

  • May impact on male and female Fertility – Research conducted on animals by NCBI shows that tulsi negatively affects the fertility of both genders. Studies show that tulsi may lower sperm count and decrease the weight of reproductive organs such as the testes, uterus, and ovary.

 

  • Cause of Damage to the liver – Tulsi has Eugenol, while a small amount of Eugenol can prevent toxin-induced damage in the liver. But taking too much or excessively can cause liver damage, diarrhea, and rapid heartbeat.

 

  • Can be Used as a Blood Thinning Medicine – This is famous for the cause of thinning of the blood. It's a good home remedy for people. But it's not good for those people who already take medicine for blood thinning. Also, it is not good for people consuming the anti-clotting medication.
