The Indian Navy started with a fleet of just three small, outdated ships. The first ship commissioned into the Navy was HMS "Minden." The second ship to be commissioned was HMS "Rattler," captured by pirates near Bombay in 1822. The third ship commissioned into the Navy was HMS "Hindostan."

HMS "Minden" is still afloat today and is preserved as a museum at Chatham Dockyard in Kent, UK.

The Indian Navy was officially established on October 18, 1959, by the merger of the Royal Indian Navy and the Indian National Army. The Indian Navy has a distinguished history of both peacetime and wartime operations. It is the world's fourth-largest Navy, with a strength of approximately 120,000 personnel and about one hundred commissioned ships.

Established the first naval force in 1746 in response to an increased French presence in India. In 1757, this force was combined with the British Royal Navy's Bombay Marine, which operated until 1834, when it became independent. The East India Company (EIC) established a shipbuilding yard at Kolkata in 1690 to build up its trade empire in Bengal. This yard constructed several vessels for the EIC and other countries like Burma and Indonesia until it closed during World War II.
